On another note...I have an apple tree that had a ton of apples last year. I have heard that apple trees are on a 2-year cycle. One year with apples, the next year without. Does anyone know?

Just use Scott's fertilizer and follow their recommended schedule. They have different blends for spring, summer, and fall. It is probably sufficient for 90% of the lawns out there. I'll usually throw on some ammonium sulfate in late spring as well. It's like $5 a bag and really greens things up.

Good call about the ammonium sulfate. I use that as well. I need all the help I can get in keeping up with my retired neighbors and that stuff is my equalizer.

LOL, I know what you mean. My retired neighbor across the street spends at least 20 hours a week doing yard work. The guy mows his lawn at least two, sometimes three times a week. Last summer he had a water bill for $300. I figure that'll be me in 30 years. I like yard work, I just don't have much time for it.

I usually do the Scott's program. This year I'm trying the lawn tonic route. You make it yourself with beer, soda, ammonia, dish soap, and mouthwash. I got the recipe from some old news report. I bought all of the ingredients today and plan to start next week after I mow. If it actually works, I'll let you know.
