Been lurking for a couple of months. I find the religious posts very interesting - some of you guys are pretty deep thinkers, even if I think some of the opinions expressed are way off base. It's always good to have something else to consider. Maybe I can add a little bit, but don't count on it, as I'm not as witty or eloquent as many of you.

I like the fact that you don't have to be online here every second to catch the good threads - unlike cougarboard. The sports posts are a little lacking, but hopefully we'll get some good football threads in the fall.

Anyway, good to be here. Go Cougs!

I wrote very briefly for the student review, during its last days (mid nineties). So yes I remember that paper. It was very good when I first started at BYU, in 92. That was when it was genuinely funny. By the end it had become less funny... it had its moments, but for the most part was full of inside jokes and inside stories.

This place can be a bit of both. Student review during its glory days, and the student review of inside jokes and inside stories. On the whole it is pretty cool. Hope you enjoy and stick around.

Cheers,

R.F.

I still remember some "Why I'm a Socialist" manifesto in the SR. Was that you? It did seem a little more irreverant in the early days, but I do think it started to get a little too serious later on, maybe it was just in response to Bateman. I always thought the writers were talented.

Nope. And I'm not a socialist. I'm a capitalist with a heart.

Bateman sucked so bad Student Review was killed by Bateman and his ilk. In the early nineties Student Review defined the social scene for the Honors crowd. It was distributed all over campus, but was run by the kids that hung out at the Maeser building. When Bateman came to town he replaced Dean Miller with Dean Cox.

Cox and Bateman kicked the Student Review off campus and emaciated the Honors Program. The honors program went from a strong social scene with its own defacto newspaper (the SR) to a network of honors classes and no centralized structure.

Welcome. It's always good to have another aboard. And you don't need to worry about what you'll add to this forum, as Mike allows me to hang out here, despite lowering the cumulative IQ by a full 50 points.

And Venkman is a good boardname, though Egon would have been better, IMO.

"You hear that boys? It's Dr. Venkman... (plays piano keys) They hate it when I do that."

I didn't think that it was on campus to begin with. I know that you couldn't get it on campus.

I missed this the first time around but I think it's interesting. My FIL was in the Honors Program and still is close friends with several guys from the program. He made friends there in the pre-orientation week and they're still together. (Yes, that sounds corny.) That's quite different from my experience arriving in 95. I did Honors before the mish and took some afterwards but realized it was a bunch of nerds taking classes, no real substance to it. We had one onfternoon barbeque and that's all i remember. I finally quit it after taking a History of Civ class that spent a week on Japanese papermaking techniques. I wish I had gotten the same experience as he did from it.

We all know who your father-in-law is so just come out and say it :). Also could you put in a good word with the PAC Princess for me, I'm guessing PAC makes a good father-in-law.

I had no idea. PAC is my favorite poster on cougarboard. I've been trying to get him to come over here more often.
