So where does alegory end and factual truth begin? Is the whole trip to the Americas, clear up to the Lamanite annihilation of the Nephites, parable? What about the plates left in the hillside? The factual truth begins when the book is internalized and we are born again. That's the only truth that matters. Nephi/Alma/Moroni are of no use to any of us.
I don't know, nor do I care, where actual things are on the spectrum.
And yes, it is useful to wonder what things might symbolize.
