In the US, various people were upset that the church let the elders sit in jail for 6 months. They thought the church "hung them out to dry", so to speak. I believe that there were certain diplomatic attempts to get the elders out of jail but they weren't successful.

I love how some Americans think the laws of other countries are of little consequence, as if all Americans travel the world with a "Get out of Jail Free" card.
Let me tell you what you get if arrested in another country:
1 - a visit from someone at the Embassy
2 - a list of local lawyers (brought by the Embassy representative)
3 - an offer to contact family or friends in the U.S. about the situation (again, from the Embassy representative).
