So my Nike+ hosed me today. I decided to run an all out 5k, and just see what happens. At one point I looked at my Garmin, and I was running a 4:34/mile pace. That lasted maybe 30 seconds, but it was still pretty cool.
Anyway, I got to 3.1 according to my Garmin in 20:32. I was pretty excited, as that's almost a 3 min. PR. Then I realized the little voice in my ipod hadn't said I was done, so I looked at it, and it said I had almost a 1/2 mile left! Stupid thing. That's the exact reason I run with my Garmin, even when I have the Nike+. So I have no proof that I ran a 20:32 5k today, but I did, and I'm pretty happy about it. |
I've decided that once the ipod is calibrated at a certain pace it is measuring by the number of steps per mile. When you speed up beyond the calibrated pace, the number of steps/mile decreases and thus the ipod reads your distance short. The faster you run beyond calibration, the shorter the distance your ipod will read. Once you recalibrate you'll be fine. The problem is that most of us don't want to run at lactate threshold every time we run. One thing on my wishlist for a nike+ upgrade would be the ability to save calibrations for different kinds of runs. You could have one for your top pace, one for a hilly run, one for your average pace etc... That would solve a lot of these problems.
Anyway, sorry to hear about your wasted run. That's a smokin' time. |
I just use my Garmin...I am not a real fast runner, and this latest 5K run this morning clocked in at 28:22. I don't have the nike+ and will probably never get it.

25:48 last night. I just got the Nike+ kit the other day, but the ipod froze up as I was starting the run, so I didn't get to log a run yet. I hope to get an official time this week.

I had already been using nikerunning.com under the username bluegoose for my training log, but couldn't figure out how to merge the two when I signed up for the nike+ account. |

So, after realizing I'm 10lbs away from saying "I'm 100 lbs bigger since high school" I decided to do something about it.
That nike+iPod thingy is awesome. I'll put some of your 5k stats to shame. watch out. Todays 5k: 40'34" ( walked two miles and ran the third) And Lance Armstrong congratulated me this morning. Thanks Lance! |
If you have the iPod nano, the $30 is well worth the investment.
