Now there's no excuse not to join our Nike+ challenges

Nike just announced the new Nike+ sport band which essentially eliminates the need to own an iPod to use the system. It's a flash drive that fits on a wrist band and has a digital readout while you're running that shows pace, distance and calories burned. After a run, you plug it into your usb @ home and it uploads to the Nike+ website just like the iPod does and you can participate in everything that us iPod owners participate in. I couldn't find the price, but I can guarantee it's a lot cheaper than an iPod. I'm guessing $50 for the kit (requires the same sensor the iPod does). I'm hoping Archaea and others will join us now.

I don't know if Arch's Nike boycott extends to accessory items such as this, or if it only includes Nike running shoes.

Heres a link to the front page on the nikeplus site.

I'm excited about this little gadget. One thing I hate about the system now is that I don't always want to run with music, but I have to bring along the Nano anyway. I also have a couple of mp3 players that I can put music from Rhapsody on, and run with different music everyday. I'll definitely be getting one of those.

If it's cheap enough I may join you in that. There are times I'd rather not have my iPod with me. I still can't find the price anywhere, has anyone seen it?

It's using the USB Port that bothers me. And using Nike running shoes is an anathema to me. I might try it.

I don't wear nike running shoes either. I'm purely a Brooks man. Just pick up one of these things and you golden:

I included the assortment of colors just so you know that, yes, you can accessorize with your different running outfits.

USB-Phobic, eh. thats the first time that I've heard that one.

Yes I agree, I have one for my shoes. Works great.

I just use sticky velcro. One side on the sensor, one side on the tongue of the shoe, under the laces.

That's what I use as well. I've wondered, though, if the Nike+ would be a tad bit more accurate if it were in the shoe sole.

Maybe. I tried one of those shoe sleeves, but it was less accurate than it was with just the velcro.

I used to do something similar to Chicken. When it was raining I would just stick it in a plastic baggie and slide it under the shoe laces. Since i got the pouch, it does seem like its a little less accurate, now that you mention it. I'm sure it has nothing to do with me getting slower, does it?

Mine is always wrong in my favor. For instance, I did 5.01 miles today, according to my Garmin. Nike+ says I did 5.13 miles. Not a significant difference of course. It just thinks I'm faster than I really am. :)
What's really weird is that when I use it on a treadmill, it's always short.

I've done both and there was no appreciable difference.

I just let it get wet. Weather has never been a problem.

Looks like it'll be 60 bucks.

I could probably talk my wife into the $60, but $90 would be a little steep for me, I think.
