Why is Kimbo Slice famous?

I saw him fight tonight for the first time. I've been hearing about what a beast he is for months now and so I stooped to watching extremeXC tonight to catch a glimpse of him. What I saw was a man who has absolutely no ground skills. He fought some no name guy and said guy was kicking his ass all over the octagon for 2 rounds. Slice barely made it out of his corner for the 3rd round. For some reason, the moron he's fighting decides to fight the 3rd round standing up and gets caught with a haymaker. Ref stops the fight after a couple big rights and Slice falls to the ground barely able to move he's so tired.

This Slice guy fights ANY real MM Artist and he's going to get absolutely destroyed from what I saw tonight. I'm really just trying to figure out how in the world he got so famous.

I read an article on him in ESPN the Magazine. He's famous because of some videos of him basically kicking the shit out of some guys in a street fight. He starts out taking some punches, and then unfazed just unleashes on the guy he's fighting.

While he isn't a full MMA fighter yet, it's things like the haymaker that he landed that make him popular. Plus he's a guy who 5 years ago was a nobody, he lived out of his car. He's a pretty badass mother. Then again, so are most of the MMA guys.

Like Sizzle said, search YouTube for Kimbo. Then you'll know why everyone is talking about him. Personally, I think he's a chump, even after reading the ESPN the Mag article on him. But he's got a heck of a punch and a chin that has never been rocked. If he had any kind of skills and conditioning he could be nasty.

The best match of his was against Sean Gannon. Gannon had Kimbo several times in the fight before Kimbo's posse kept jumping in and saving Kimbo saying Gannon was using tactics and holds not agreed upon. Gannon won the fight but his face looked like Hasim Rahman's after his bout with Holyfield.

bYuPride 06-01-2008 06:53 PM

James Thompson or whatever the name of the guy that Kimbo Slice was fighting has one nasty ear... that thing was gross. It was funny to see his face after a couple upper cuts from Kimbo and seeing his eyes roll to the back of his head.

I watched this one today. While Gannon's face was quite lumpy, Kimbo was left in a heap on the ground. I'm just not impressed, (and I'd say his chin was rocked in that one). I watched the others too, he's a very good stand up brawler but how do we know the quality of these people he was fighting? Physically the guy is a beast, I agree with you that if he gets some training (especially in the ground game) he could be good but as it stands he is completely unworthy of the hype as far as MMA goes. I've decided his fame is based at least 50% on appearance. He's gigantic, ripped and has that freaky beard with a Mr. T haircut. He LOOKS like he shouldn't lose to anyone.

The guys he fights are bums. In fact Gannon was signed to a UFC fight after they saw him pummel Kimbo and Gannon was beat pretty easily in the octagon.

SoCalCoug 06-02-2008 06:34 AM

I watched the Kimbo Slice fight, and I wasn't too impressed with him.

I liked the Gina Carano fight. Especially because she's pretty hot.

I enjoyed the middleweight championship fight. It was pretty bogus that they stopped it because the guy was poked in the eye. In any case, that one was the best fight of the night.

I've never really watched MMA - this actually piqued my interest a bit. I think I like it better than boxing.

She was the only reason I watched. The Crush fight (she's from American Gladiators) was the first live female MMA fight ever.

So when I hear people talking about bum fight videos, these are the bums they're talking about? I always pictured people paying crackheads who could barely walk to beat each other up. I had no idea they were talking about people in the kind of shape that I saw in those youtube videos.

Kimbo is a joke. The guy has never fought anyone of any substance. James Thompson was knocked out in under 30 seconds in an MMA fight by Butterbean. Thompson had lost his last 3 fights in under 30 seconds. He has a glass chin and he took Kimbos best shots and still stayed on his feet. Thompson also has awful ground skills, if he was mediocre on the ground he finishes Kimbo.

The worst part about that was the ref, Thompson has side control, going for full mount and the ref stands him up? He was completely favoring Kimbo, Kimbo is all the EliteXC has. Even when Thompson had Kimbos arm pinned to the ground and he was dropping elbows, the ref kept saying "You need to work, do something." threatening to stand it up. Also the stoppage was premature.

In the fight between Smith and Lawler the EliteXC really screwed themselves, that had the chance to be a fight of the year candidate. Then you stop it because of a poke in the eye? This is what happens when you have a female ring doctor.

Also the whole production was a joke, Gary Shaw (the commissioner of the EliteXC) is a boxing promoter, he made it look like a WWE event. They showed the dancers more than the fighters, the commercials were ridiculous and half of America missed the Kimbo fight because they went over by a full hour. So if you had it tivoed you missed it.

I'm not a fan of Kimbo, or the hype that's associated with him. Did you see how gassed he was at the end of the fight? I thought they were going to have to bring the EMT's to revive his ass. Nice to see EliteXC protect their cash cow. Can you imagine what Big Nog would do to this guy?

Overall, I thought the card was ok. I agree with CJ, the production was a joke. Was it necessary to announce the fighters two seperate times? I did like Gus Johnson's play by play; give him time to get better acquainted with the nuances and he could be a good one.

I agree with you on Gus, he did do a good job. I also thought they needed to let the guy from Pride talk more he knows what he is talking about. But I dont think he will be back after he mentioned that Robbie Lawler lost 3 of 4 fights in the UFC and his contract was not renewed.

I was laughing so hard when he said that. I'll bet he got screamed at. Lawler was by far the best fighter they had in the octagon that night and he's not good enough for UFC. I think we all knew going in that extremeXC wasn't going to be anything great. I just wanted to see what all this Kimbo Slice fuss was about. Turns out, it's about nothing.

No bumfights are exactly as you described and are rather disgusting.

Kimbo's MMA bouts have been jokes. They're just trying to protect him and ride the hype and hoping somewhere along the way he learns a few things and can be decent. He's far from it now. His conditioning is weak. He looked like he did against Gannon at the end of that Thompson fight.

I doubt Elite XC will last long. Lots of the radio and sports talk have been bashing CBS. The production was a joke. CBS should watch WEC on Versus of all channels and take notes.

Carano was good. Her face and tig ols go a long way to help.

Lawler hasn't been good for awhile. I've always liked Scott Smith. Smith's fight against Pete Sell was epic. One of my favorites ever. Best finish to a fight I think I have ever watched.

Another reason the WEC is great, Frank Mir is the best in the business. He is enjoyable to listen to.

I like Frank Mir quite a bit. When he burst onto the scene though I couldn't stand him. I think his motorcycle accident and his tough path back have humbled him and have made him much more palatable for me. He is smart though and knows his moves.

Elite XC sucks. They did get damn good ratings though so I doubt CBS regrets their decision. EliteXC is just bush league though.

They drew a 2.7 rating which is not bad, but that is probably because a lot of casual fans tuned in, if you were a casual fan, would that show have hooked you? I doubt it.

In contrast the XFL, drew a 9.7 its first week and never drew close a 1 share after that.

So great quotes about the EliteXC..........

What the main event lacked in quality it made up for in entertainment, unintentional or not. Here are my four favorite absurdly hysterical moments of the Kimbo-Colossus fight.
4. When the fight was called, Colossus, the loser, tried to fight the ref for unfairly ending it. Kimbo, the winner, collapsed in exhaustion as many in the once pro-Kimbo crowd in Newark, N.J., turned on their guy. Not exactly a victory lap.
3. The CBS announcing crew’s endless hyperbole reaching its pinnacle when one of them compared Kimbo to Tiger Woods.
This would be applicable if Tiger had gained fame hitting trick shots in putt putt and then was invited to a second rate club championship which CBS was conned into televising. He then shot a final round 124, after which he was declared the winner anyway.
2. The judges. Kimbo spent most of the second round getting his skull hit and thanking the heavens that Colossus could only manage weak punches and elbows. Anyone else and this ends ugly. Even with Colossus, the fight could have been called (ha) in this undeniably terrible round for Kimbo.
Naturally, one of the “impartial judges” scored the round in his favor anyway. If this had gone to decision, is there any doubt at least one of the judges would have scored the three-round fight for Kimbo, five rounds to zero?
1. The Ear. What, you’ve seen an ear like that before? When everyone predicted this would be a freak show, no one thought the Colossus would take it to heart. His cauliflower ear was massive, this huge ball of blood and puss hanging off his head.
Ah, didn’t anyone think to mention he might want to drain that thing before Kimbo whacks him upside the head and makes it explode? Which, of course, happened.

Did one of the judges seriously score the 2nd round for Kimbo? He should be fired immediately. All I remember from that round is Kimbo taking about 1,000 elbows to the head and wondering if they were going to call the fight because he wasn't protecting himself.

Word is they drew 6.5 million viewers, which is better than a 4 rating. That's the most ever for a live MMA fight on basic cable. And EliteXC is definitely bush-league compared to UFC, both in the quality of fighters and production wise (though UFC doesn't fight women yet, and again, Gina Carano was awesome).

Slice (aka "
Kevin Ferguson") is a chump, but he's the best draw that EliteXC has. Even his YouTube videos are bull. He's a classless mouth that weighs 270 pounds.

The first 4 fights of the Elite XC event were legitimate quality fights that could be found on any WEC or UFC undercard, with two of them being headline quality fights. The Kimbo fight was a circus, but not long ago the UFC was promoting and announcing Brock Lesnar as a former WWE champion.

The production was a little slow, even though conversely 5 fights on the WEC card went over the 2 hours alloted for the event, but the ratings were solid and CBS has deep pockets to make subsequent events bigger, better and more efficient.

Now, the Affliction event in a month and a half? Talk about legit MMA talent outside the UFC. Wowzers, Sylvia, Arlovski, Fedor, Barnett, a surging Rizzo, and now with Trump possibly Tito Ortiz and Randy Couture?

I'll give you Fedor, but the others? Definitely the best outside of the UFC, but there's a reason those guys aren't in the UFC anymore. Sylvia is a joke. Arlovski is a has been. Tito and Couture are in that boat too. Barnet and Rizzo are decent.

Looking forward to next weeks card. Jacare has been training in our gym for the last two week; real nice guy and looks to be in great shape. He's got a tough match up with an experienced Mayhem Miller. It's hard to judge his stand up, but he's one of the few fighters with legit world class BJJ.

MikeWaters 06-05-2008 03:23 PM

Mayhem Miller is a tough matchup. I think I saw Jacare fight already, but can't remember anything. I would not want to go in the ring against Miller. He looks vicious.

Sunday June 15, Dream 4.

Looking forward to seeing Aoki fight. I'm really intrigued that a guy as skinny as him can win partly on the basis of flexibility.

Jacare choked out his last opponent in the first round.

I've enjoyed watching Mayhem over the years. He can be a little difficult to stomach at times, but he's always entertaining and puts on a good show.

cougjunkie 06-05-2008 03:39 PM

I dont think Dream is bad, I watch all of the cards, and they are free on HDnet so its a good option. However I dont follow the Asian fighters as much as the ones in the US. I do know that Aoki has some crazy ways to pull guard, but I still think he would get blasted by BJ Penn.

Also Fusnik if you really think that the first 4 fights on the CBS card were world class you are up in the night. The Brett Rogers fight was two bums going at it. Phil Baroni is a never-was, Carano and Young was good for a chick fight, Smith and Lawler could have been a fight of the year candidate had they not stopped it.

But CBS said they stopped it because they didnt want anything to get to gruesome on TV. That is why the CBS production is a joke, also Caitlin Young said she was ready to go another round and the CBS officials told her that "we dont want to see a girl get beat up this bad" so they stopped it.

EliteXC has lost money 3 years in a row, and the ratings for their next card will not be anywhere close, and wait until Gary Shaw puts together the "all-women" card that he has been talking about, throw that on CBS and see who watches it.

Mayhem is entertaining out of the ring, it seems like every UFC show I see him in the stands making faces on camera. In the ring I dont think he is that great.

MikeWaters 06-05-2008 03:43 PM

I still don't get how the last UFC card was so great. Boring. Even the Penn fight was boring. Like watching bad boxing.

I've never seen Penn fight on the ground, cause last fight was the only fight I've seen, so I have no idea how he would do against Aoki. But Aoki vs. Penn is definitely a fight that I would like to see, even if Penn is heavily favored.
