new forum?

I was thinking about starting up a new forum subject:

"Finances"

To discuss things like financial planning, retirement, stocks, etc.

Any takers?

The_Tick 05-02-2006 03:33 PM

I think it would be awesome.

Fish 05-02-2006 03:35 PM

Count me in.

Fish 05-02-2006 03:36 PM

I think a 'technology' forum would be fun too...

livecoug 05-02-2006 03:51 PM

great idea on finance forum... also, if you want to set up an " 'Ask LiveCoug' advice column" forum, that would be great..

How about we call it the no livecougs club?

Archaea 05-02-2006 04:19 PM

Finance and technology would be great.

you already have that one! ;)

All-American 05-02-2006 07:36 PM

But we only have one livecoug. Wouldn't we need two in order to exclude one?

SteelBlue 05-02-2006 07:38 PM

A finance section is a great idea. I was also going to suggest another: Food. We have a lot of Master BBQer's here and I think more than a few gourmands. Perhaps the chit/chat section is sufficient, but I'm willing to wager that a food section could stand alone.

That is true. I just feel like we should be proactive so we don't have problems in the future. :)

I have another suggestion: Gardening

I know there are a lot of green thumbs out there who'd like to swap tips.

I'm not against it, but I've yet to see a gardening post on this board.

Personally, I love plants and would love to show off my various fruit trees, garden, etc.

We don't want the crap, we want the good stuff and we want it for free. Geez, do we have to draw a map?

Ah, my food idea was too gay for you I guess? Maybe so, but there have been many BBQ threads and I've already used a few of the suggestions. If everyone here is really as fat as they say they are, it's a subject in which we probably have the most collective expertise.

My wife's grandfather is 90-some years old and has lived in his Ventura, CA, home for almost 50 years. It slopes upward dramatically in the backyard, but he was an engineer in the Army and decided a long time ago to build three terraced levels and plant fruit trees. It's amazing back there. He has three 50' avocado trees that produce in staggered times of the year and they never, NEVER go without. They have hundreds and hundreds each year and have to give them away so they don't spoil. They have lemons and oranges that produce bushels and bushels of fruit. Then there are the apples, tangerines and whatever else too.

It's crazy to see what he was able to get out of a fairly average size yard. When they eventually sell, it'll interesting to see how much value those trees add to the home, too.

Pictures of a yard like that would be awesome....

Parrot Head 05-02-2006 10:39 PM

I found a pic. So maybe I exaggerated on the 50' part, but they're still really big and provide all the avocado you can imagine. This shot is about half the width of the backyard and the organge tree was recently trimmed severely. The angle really doesn't do it justice. The neighbor has been there 50 years too and he decided to store rusty Benzes and set up a chicken coop in his yard. Gotta love roosters in the AM. That's me showing off my avocado-gettin' skills. (Sorry the pic isn't as exciting as hot babysitter.)

Seriously, who doesn't like gardening that has ever tried it? And I'm not referring soley to the vegetable variety. I'm just talking about digging and planting in general. I suppose general yardwork and landscaping could also be included in the same genre.

Its a great way to relax in the backyard in between games of kickball or jumping on the trampoline with the kids.

Someday when I own a house that I don't plan to sell within three years, I will be able to indulge my desire to shape and conquer earth (obviously on the limited backyard scale).

I love building stuff in the yard. I've layed a few stone patios, built a couple of decks, built raised garden beds, planted trees...

Someday I will have the back yard of my dreams. The one I've got now is pretty cool but I can't dump any $$ into it to make it "perfect" because I'll get nothing for it on the resale.
