Utah is doing something this year that they haven't done in the past two or three years, and that is rely on inexperienced freshmen to contribute. I know that it has become passe to say "Well, if Giac were still the coach, such and such would happen..." but it's true. If Giac were the coach, Morgan Grimm (among others) would be expected to contribute right away. Boylan has done a great job of getting the most out of a limited rotation.
BYU has a big advantage because it has a good mix of veteran talent and leadership and young talent. Guys like Miles, Fredette, and whoever that other freshmen is that plays a lot, can come in and contribute because they are not relied on night in and night out to be one of the top three scorers.
