I like watching football, but with head injuries so commonplace as well as the punishment on players' bodies overall that I'm sure often leads to a lifetime of chronic pain in many cases, which can easily lead to problems with painkillers for many former players, I think football may have already hit its peak in popularity. I don't have sons, but I know a lot of folks now who are directing their sons more toward other sports. Baseball may actually have a resurgence in the next 20 years. How far in the future do public high schools and middle schools stop sponsoring it? It's expensive and increasingly perceived to be dangerous.

I've thought the time is coming when middle class white families won't put their kids into football.

Then it will be like boxing, the domain of the poor, esp. poor minorities.

I'm a boxing fan, btw. Wouldn't put my kids into boxing.

A big win for football was the NFL concussion lawsuit settlement, where the players settled for pennies on the dollar.

I boxed a little as a boy, before I discovered I didn't enjoy being hit in the face. I retired champion U9 or something. There were about three boys in the division.

I would not put a child into boxing, but my boys did participate in full contact karate. My elder son played one season of football then switched to soccer.
