This BYU stuff is getting more and more depressing
all the way around. I don't know if the fan base can survive another terrible season.

Then beyond that, California and Arizona are the level of teams any decent BYU team in the last 15 years would beat. I love Ty Detmer, but he didn't have the experience for the position he held. Maybe he would have done ok as a QB coach under a good coordinator. At least this new OC has the pedigree for it, having coached at LSU, Virginia Tech, Auburn and Colorado before coming here. And offensive line coaches typically make good coordinators because they know the nuts and bolts of the Oline and understand how a good line is everything for making the rest of the offense work. |
an opening win at Arizona is a good start. It's already beyond what last year's team could do. Regardless of how good or bad Arizona may be, in this game the offense looked like they had a plan and knew what they were supposed to be trying to do, unlike in ANY game last year, even against the really bad opponents.

I expected a good season. Last year's problems were straightforward and solvable. If we had a talent shortage, then it wouldn't have been so easiliy solved.

Seemed like this team was motivated, and taking care of the fundamentals like good tackling. Good line play on both sides.
My confidence in Mangum is low. But he's serviceable. Like a lot of football games, the outcomes from here on out will depend a lot on how good our lines are compared to other lines. What's going to happen when we can't run the ball? Well we will find out. All I ask is to be moderately entertained. |
