Polyamory/Triads - the coming battle

If polygamy/polyamory was legalized and allowed to enter marriage contracts, the church would be in a big pickle.
Would they ban polygamous investigators from joining the church? In other words, would they say, "Sure you can join the church, but you will have to break up your family first. You will need divorce(s)." How ironic would that be? Maybe that is what the church fears the most in the gay marriage thing--what could happen next. The church, I'm sure, desperately does not want to deal with polygamy at any level. They want zero conversation, zero thought about it. They would likely say "Polygamy is evil because the Lord hasn't currently commanded it." It would be a mess. Then imagine, against all odds, the church "allowed" polygamy. Think of the giant logistical mess that would be. Would men be required to get "permission" to enter polygamy (assuming there were men that *wanted* to do it)? Imagine what a fiasco that could become. You would have civil and temple polygamy and different rules for the entering in of them. Then imagine the social changes it would cause, esp. from the outside looking in. Would they ask some couples to enter polygamy as a kind of "calling"? I.e. "We've prayed and ask you to consider marrying the Widow Jones. If you agree, the Elders Quorum has agreed to clean out her trailer." This is not "cool" Hugh Hefner polygamy. This is butt-ugly turn-your-world-upside-down polygamy. |
What's the big deal? Arguments in favor of gay marriage are nothing like polygamy, right? Isn't that what we've been told?

Should gay couples go to prison if they live like a married couple and consider themselves to be married? Is there anyone advocating that? The SCOTUS decision that allowed the federal govt. to imprison people who considered themselves married (but weren't really), but allows polygamous relationships among those who do not consider themselves married (i.e. promiscuity) is bizarre. |
