Jay Drew fired by the SL Tribune
I was never the biggest fan of his work. It seemed like at his best, he was somewhat average in his caliber. Never seemed to ask tough questions. At his worst, he came across as negative and whiny.
We all know that the SL Tribute has struggled. And it might be approaching its final doom. Having said that, I think this is also a sign of the times for BYU. BYU is not worth covering for the SLT. And that says something. |
Frankly, it's weird that a state and city as small as Utah and SLC, respectively, could support two daily papers. Dallas lost its second paper a long time ago. Houston as well.
I would guess that the only reason that SLC has two papers is the Mormon church. Some people want the home cooking. Some want the "independent voice." But w/o that factor, there would only be one newspaper. As it is, it is somewhat likely that there will be eventually no newspapers in SLC/Utah. |
I think in the short run, the Church has been hurt by the Trib's diminution.
Without credentialed columnists, they just give the guest columnist megaphone to anti's who don't know what they're talking about. |
I wonder what it will be like when the Trib is gone, and there really is no media that can call the church out about anything. It will then be a wild west of blogs and forums. And the weekly circular.

it’s almost been 3 years since Drew was fired by the Trib. Wow, time is just flying by. Jay Drew - who says Utah is the best sub-.500 basketball team in America.
