According to MMApayout.com they are mainly trying to purchase the video library. I think that it is great for the sport to have a channel like HDnet dedicated almost solely to MMA. But I have a feeling that Mark Cuban is trying to secure as many assets and other organizations as possible so that he can have a roster good enough to compete with the UFC.

I hope Cuban is serious behind his MMA motives, I'd love to see another promotion duke it out with the UFC. I'm hoping Affliction is able to ride it out, but it doesn't look like they'll survive.

I think Affliction is done.

What other assets come with the IFL? Haven't most of their good fighters already signed elsewhere? So Cuban wouldn't be getting a stable of fighters, right?

I didn't care much for the fighters in IFL nor the format. The team thing is intriguing though and it's too bad that it folded when it did because they had some interesting ideas like allowing other teams to enter if they wanted like Tito and BJ's boys.

I don't see any good reason to want the UFC to have competition unless you just like the idea of sticking it to Dana White and the Zuffas. It just dilutes the pool and you don't get the best fighting the best. I get the idea of having feeder leagues or "minor leagues" but I don't see how direct competition helps at this point.

What good did the USFL or CBA ever do? How has having WBO, IBF and WBC belts worked for boxing? The NFL should be the model, not boxing.

The benefits, IMO, of having a different organization are: classification rankings, uniform rules for MMA fights, no more Chuck Liddell losing 2/3 fights and being one win away from a title shot while they can make fighters like Lyoto fight over and over and over without mention of a title shot.

Do you mean the NFL or the AFL (which later merged with the NFL)? That did seem to work pretty well...

This would be more like the NFL merging with the CFL for one or two good players. Then the NFL would help co-promote the CFL and start splitting profits with them. Eventhough they are by far the biggest organization in the world and regardless if they land those one or two top players they will still be the top organization.

That underscores my point. The best teams got consolidated together.
