Good quote from an article I read at lunch

From an article titled "A Dad's Guide to Anger Management"

"Gen X dads (me) are still sorting out the dueling role models our culture has served up. In one corner are the Greatest Generation fathers (my dad) who taciturnly got the job done, assumed their affection was implied, and weren't above the occasional belt to the ass. In the other are the touchy-feely boomer parents who say the fear factor has no place in the paternal palette. Thanks, Thirtysomething. It's left us to find the middle ground."

The first time my son kicks me in the nuts on purpose, it's going to be hard not to spank him.

Yes, I have spanked my kids. So what?

MikeWaters 05-02-2008 09:11 PM

Norcal, doesn't seem like it is much of a dilemma for you.

Does it say when you get angry to bite a pillow until you calm down?

MikeWaters 05-02-2008 09:16 PM

I don't think norcal was spanked, because he doesn't fit this at all.

Quote:

Long-term consequences of spanking can include increased aggressiveness, antisocial behavior, and delinquency.

“I have never accepted the principle of ‘spare the rod and spoil the child.”... I am persuaded that violent fathers produce violent sons... Children don’t need beating. They need love and encouragement. They need fathers to whom they can look with respect rather than fear. Above all, they need example.” -Gordon B. Spanking a kid? Hell no, not for me. It's not like I am swatting them all the time, but quite the contrary. It is very rarely done with any real force. Mostly it is just a firm tap on the rear to get their attention, and so they know dad is serious.
