SLTrib: KN wasn't offered until Wednesday morning

Amateur hour at BYU. Which is the only kind of hour that exists at BYU. "The BYU way."

They effed that up.

They want Kyle Whittingham. Everything that has happened is consistent with that idea.

If you think Whitt is a done deal, why give KN the official offer?

Whitt is going to play BYU in hopes of getting a doggy treat from Chris Hill.

It's not a done deal, but it's who they would prefer, and the longer this goes the more obvious that is. The problem is they can't talk to him until after Saturday. So that means they drag their feet a little on the others. Maybe they were just comfortable enough with KN to finally offer him Wednesday. Maybe they also thought he probably wouldn't take it though based on the conversations they'd been having.

And yes, maybe KW is going to say no and is only trying to get a better deal from Utah. Or maybe not. The typical low-self esteem attitude of our fanbase is pretty quick to always assume the worst. I'd be comfortable with Sitake at this point, but BYU would be dumb not to at least talk to KW, IMO. It's just that they're stuck in the unusual situation of having to play them in the bowl game. If they were playing different opponents, they wouldn't have to wait. Just one more day.

You don't need to talk to him. Just talk to his agent.

It's like this hiring process is from 1955.

We don't know that they haven't been. They probably have been, which is why they haven't pulled the trigger on someone else. But they can't say anything about it until after the game.

I don't see other hiring processes looking like this. Where coaches are publicly known to come in and interview, and then they are left dangling as the process drags out for 2 weeks. This is not normal.

It all makes sense now. All makes sense.

The Brethren wanted Holmoe to interview Niumatalolo and offer him.

Holmoe had to go through the motions and did so with fear and trembling. Didn't pick him up at the airport. Didn't offer until two days later.

I seriously doubt that Whittingham was ever a possibility or in play. Sitake was announced prior to the game, or during the game. So the idea of interviewing Whitt after the game never happened.

Looked like some phone calls happened. I'm sure Darrel Bevel was called and Lance Anderson. KN was of course interviewed. Probably got an insulting offer in terms of salary. And was also shown that salaries for assistants would be a major step backwards, putting doubt into KN's mind about whether he could assemble a staff.

Offers come in late and low on Wed. Summarily rejected.

Then Holmoe talks to Sitake, the fallback choice. Really the only other guy in the mix. And he's a much easier target because he's not a HC and BYU's salary is an upgrade to him.

The process was ugly and inefficient and played out poorly in public. But this is the BYU way.
