Archimedes

Δῶς μοι πᾶ στῶ καὶ τὰν γᾶν κινάσω

Give me a place to stand and I will move the earth. What do you believe he meant?

Colly Wolly 03-16-2008 08:34 PM

Whether he knew it or not, he sounds like a Gallant Gallstone.

I don't read Greek. But with a long enough lever, a single person could move the earth.

Okay, that's where the reference comes from. It sounds cool, and is something I actually kinda understood.

Where did you find this quote?

I'm familiar with a different version:

Πᾷ βῶ καὶ χαριστίωνι τὰν γᾶν κινήσω πᾶσαν

"Say where and with a lever I will move the entire world." (Doric is a tough dialect)

[Diodorus Siculus 26.18.34.]

It was in a piece I found, but Doric is kicking my butt. I better stick to Attic, Koine and a bit of Ionic.
