Is Ginobili a true Sixth Man?
Apparently everyone with a vote thinks so.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/s...=SixthMan-0708 And yet he plays more minutes than anyone on the Spurs but Duncan and Parker. Makes no sense. |

Since 2000 here are the numbers of the past 6th man award winners: First here are Ginobilis numbers this year: 22.6 points, 5.5 rebounds 5.2 assists in 31.2 minutes per night. 2006-07 Leandro Barbosa 15.8 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists in 29.7 minutes 2005-06 Mike Miller 13.7 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists in 31.6 minutes 2004-05 Ben Gordon 16.9 points, 2.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists in 31.0 minutes 2003-04 Antawn Jamison 14.8 ponts, 6.3 rebounds, .9 assists in 29 minutes 2002-03 Bobby Jackson 15.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, 3.7 assists in 28.4 minutes 2001-02 Corliss Williamson 13.6 points, 4.1 rebounds in 29.6 minutes 2000-01 Aaron Mckie 11.6 points, 5.0 assists, 4.1 rebounds in 31.5 minutes You tell me if he deserves the award. If not then nobody since 2000 has deserved it either. |
Fair enough. But I think anyone who logs the 3rd-most minutes on his team (only 3 mpg fewer than #1) isn't a Sixth Man.
If that disqualifies the past six or 10 or 30 winners, so be it. Obviously the award's qualifications need tweaking. Come to think of it, what are the qualifications, anyway? |
crap, you just gave him the material he needs for his next column.

A better question would be why anyone would care about Ginoboli in particular or the NBA in general?

Ginobili is widely-recognized as an elite player. On any other team he'd start in a heartbeat. |
