flashbacks of the Jeremiah Project

A few years ago, I was a grader in a class on ancient Greek civilization. One of the papers the students wrote dealt with homosexuality in ancient Greece. More than a handful (I'd guess 8-10) students came up with some pretty vitriolic condemnations of homosexuality. At least two of them cited the Jeremiah project: http://www.jeremiahproject.com/culture/homosex1.html

When I read "The Divine Institution of Marriage" (http://newsroom.lds.org/ldsnewsroom/...on-of-marriage, for your convenience), I had an uneasy flashback to this type of rhetoric. While the lds.org document is couched in more sophisticated language and claims academic grounding (although there are serious problems with Blankenhorn's and Popenoe's publications - the two academic sources that the document relies most heavily upon), it essentially puts the church on the same side of the fence as the weirdos who put up the jeremiah project website. Granted, there may be a significant amount of distance between the positions, but they're definitely on the same side of this issue.

Altogether, I find it disquieting.
