Top Church callings

Here is my list for top 5 church callings:

1. Nursery leader--I mentioned this in another post, but how good is it when you get to play with toys, eat snack food and just hang out for 2 hours. There is zero time comittment outside of church besides the occasional 'I love animals' or 'I have grandparents' lesson that one has to prepare. Good times. The one drawback is lack of going to a 'real' gospel lesson.

2. Anything piano--If you are called to play the piano, that usually becomes your calling. Little work outside of church, but you get to go to class and be a part of it even if it is just playing the piano.

3. Gospel Doctrine--great calling if you love studying up on the church. Rather time consuming outside of church but you get to lead the discussion and do some interesting research during the week.

What church callings have you had or wouldn't mind having?

Hey buddy, where did you learn how to count to five....at UCLA?

Archaea 07-28-2006 09:43 PM

My top five.

1. Part time investigator.

2. Stake spy, doubling as an inactive.

3. Primary teacher for junior primary with classes of less than five.

4. EQ Hymnal coordinator.

5. Pew supporter, otherwise known as HP sheep counter.

I learned to count at BYU.

That has been my dream calling for many years. Alas, I have not yet been so blessed.

Without a doubt, being the Primary Pianist is the BEST calling I've ever had. You don't have to go to Elder's Quorum and be bored to death. You don't have to go to Gospel Doctrine and have the same old lessons that they've been teaching every four years for the last three decades. It takes zero effort and preparation on my part, and the kids are hilarious.

Some of my favorite things I've heard in primary:

Primary Leader: "What language was the Book of Mormon written in?"
Primary Kid: "French!"

Primary Leader: "How do we feel when we do bad things?"
Primary Kid: "When I do bad things it hurts because my mommy spanks me"

My #2 calling is Nursery. Good for all the reasons that UteStart mentioned, plus if the kids are naughty or crying or stinky you just take them to their parents - you don't have to deal with anything.

#3 is being any kind of Ward Clerk. They are generally "Sunday only" callings. I would much rather spend my Sundays on church callings than spend weeknights on church callings. The only bad parts to these callings are tithing settlement time if you are the financial clerk and disciplinary councils if you are the Ward Clerk.

My list of worst callings are:

-- Ward Mission Leader or Stake Missionary - Can't think of anything worse than this. Ugh.
-- Anything in Young Mens or Scouts. I think these chew up more time than being a counselor in the bishopric.
-- Ward Executive Secretary - This poor guy spends more time in his calling than a counselor in the bishopric
-- Roadshow calling - Although this calling is rare, I've suffered through it once and feel good about saying that I will never accept this one again. Let someone else have the "blessings" that go along with this calling)

worst calling? anything you've already done once. if I didn't screw it up the first time, what makes them think I won't the second time.

Nursery is awesome. I can't understand why people avoid it.

I was talking to Dean Jackson, who runs the local Assemblies of God church here in Provo and he said that they do intensive background checks on all nursery leaders. Good idea, but I was a little surprised. Perhaps they use volunteers. Anyway, he also told me that a member of their church donated a set of those little electrical units they pass out at restaurants that light up when you table is ready. They give one to each parent when they drop a kid off at the nursery. If the kid starts crying or loads his diaper they just buzz the parent to come to the nursery. Great idea, eh?
