LOL!!! I was too! My bishop also didn't have a clue what it involved doing. Sounds important.

:)

Sadly, most scout committee members never are quite sure of what they should be doing. But having a fully staffed and motivated scout committee is wonderful. And extremely rare.

Our ward announced the SC meeting in sacrament last week and also invited all scouts' parents to attend every meeting. I know that could just be more hands in the kitchen, but considering the normal number of active chefs, it could only be an improvement.

Your job is to make it so the scoutmaster can focus on the boys and not all of the other scouting crap.

A few thoughts:
Make sure your leaders are trainined
Recruit merit badge counselors
Plan regular courts of honor and boards of review
Get tour permits
Friends of Scouting
The annual (or bi-annual?) troop rechartering
Planning for scout camp - reserve camp, get money from the boys, send the money to camp, etc.

There's alot to do if you do it right.

I'm sure your council or district has training that will get you started.

A great committee chairman can make a big difference.

And a poor one can kill a committee pretty darn fast.

But those are good points Doctor Venkman. Having been on the scoutleader side of things, it sure would make things a lot easier if every unit had a well organized committee.
