Opened up the hive today again

The ants seem to have taken the bait and aren't going after the hive. Didn't see any beetles, but not really expecting to yet.

So this time I didn't wear the bee suit. I just wore the headgear and gloves. The bees started buzzing a little bit, so feeling a little exposed, I retreated. I got the smoker, put some pine needles in it, and lit it.

I have to say that the effect was amazing. Buzzing bees suddenly quited down and went straight to the comb. It was like having Rosie O'Donnell find out you slept with her lover one moment, to Goatnapper finding out his wife has just made an appointment for enhancements the next minute. I wasn't expecting the effect to be so profound, despite the fact I have watched my dad work with bees many times.

I checked the comb and couldn't find any capped brood (meaning larvae that are metamorphosizing). I looked harder and did find some larvae which is a really good sign. That means new bees are on the way.

Put another 2.5 cups of sugar in the feeder. They still have at least 4 or 5 frames to build out the comb.

Lots of pollen stores and the beginnings of pollen stores as well.
