While this does happen, it's not as prevalent as you make it out to be. I had Religion professors who were quite open about topics such as Fanny Alger, Adam-God, and Mountain Meadows.

A temple recommend is only required if you are LDS. I believe the non-LDS faculty/staff requires an ecclesiastical endorsement from their pastor or priest.
I'm don't think this is a good idea...
