I know there is such thing as machines where you insert slides and they create a digital file. I'm sure there is an online service that would do it. Although you would have to cross your fingers that the slides wouldn't get lost in the mail.
As far as getting into photography, it depends on your budget. I would try to go digital SLR, and I can give you some thoughts if you go that direction. Anythingi less than SLR, I would have to ask around.
One thing I love about SLR shooting in RAW mode is how much you can digitally manipulate the exposure without losing detail. It's amazing really.
