The reason it would not be an advantage is that good straight up defense causes a lot of misses.
Giving up free throws, 3 point plays and getting your bigs in foul trouble do not help.
So I'm guessing it is not as simple and easy as you say.
I could be wrong however. Maybe hard fouling is the solution to poor defense.

The teams that do it are the teams that don't have points scored in the paint on them. You only have to foul a guy really hard once or twice before he thinks twice about going into the lane, and settles for jump shots instead. Of course you want to prevent players from ever getting to the paint, but if they get there they should leave bruised.
No easy layups. Great example McGrady beats his man and the player watches as he throws down an alley-oop dunk. He should have put him on the ground instead of giving him the easy 2.
