I hear you. If you like architecture, you need to visit Sicily and Palermo in particular. Because Sicily is the key island in the Mediterranean Sea, it has been conquered by so many civilizations, so you have all kinds of architecture - Byzantine, Norman, Arabic, Gothic, etc.
There is a cathedral in Monreale, which is a small suburb of Palermo inside which the upper half of the walls in the main room are covered with gold leaf. In that gold leaf is engraved pictures that tell the story of the entire New Testament.
It's amazing to see.
