I doubt if you'll feel much difference in performance on the Texas flatlands, other to lift it up next to your old bike to show off to your buddies.
24 pounds? That seems a bit beefy to me. Mine is not light by any means, but I think I'm running about 22 pounds. You might want to take the car jack out of your saddle bag before your next ride. It makes changing a flat a lot easier, but it may bog you down a bit on the sprints and rollers.
