I've never felt like I needed to put a chair in the garage or the opener in the bike saddle...

Perhaps the difference is a love for your bike that borders on infidelity and some good old paranoia?
Hey now, I was in extenuating circumstances. I had finished a century ride in Utah with my uncle and had then thrown the bike on the car and driven all night to get back to Califronia and pulled into our carport/garage at about 5 in the morning, bleary-eyed and in serious need of sleep. I simply forgot about the clearance issue. I just hope you knocked on wood when you made of guys like me.
