for you scholars, what do we know of the 1800 conception of this (if any). What would JS have relied on (if anything) if he come up with this on his own?

Certainly the concept has large bearing on our world, as there are our entire countries toppled or about to be toppled by organized criminals.

I'm curious if this was a concern in Joseph Smith's time.

I read an article about one of the prison gangs based in Brazil. The one who led a mass assault against Brazilian police, leading to basically war. Amazing. And a warning to us.
