Not too long ago, I was at the DC temple, and boy does that stand in stark contrast. It's like a castle. But I don't know that that is really important or adds much.
The temple is in the heart after all.

There is nothing wrong with creating pleasing architecture. While on a visit to the Cologne Cathedral my children were mesmerized by its scope and magnificence, inspiring a sense of awe and majestry. If we wish for those who worship to be easily inspired a sense of awe, without opulence, is something worthy and worthwhile.
Of course, something pedestrian may be useful when cost is a premium.
