The ring is not going to physically prevent anything. It is just a ring worn on the third finger of the left hand - the same finger on which we put our wedding bands. It is really a reminder of a promise to stay pure until you are married.

In most of the churches around here there is usually a group ceremony with the parents and the teens. The teen promises to stay pure until their wedding day, the parents give them a ring - some have the inscription, some don't. Then the parents and teens sign a certificate, which the church holds onto. In some churches, the certificates are posted on a bulletin board as a public statement.

Should the teen fail in their promise, they are required to give the ring back to their parents. Some churches require that the parent tell the pastor so that the certificate can be destroyed and the teen counseled, some don't.

If the teen manages to keep their promise, the ring and certificate are to be given to their spouse on their wedding night.

The ring ceremony between parent and teen is not considered sacred.
