Default Transitions in the workplace

MBN’s post (in the seminary thread) about professional dress got me thinking about social mores in the workplace…

My first 'real' job was at an insurance company. It was the summer after my freshman year at school and before my mission. I was a runner/currier. I'd wear a shirt and tie to work every day. Being five minutes late in the morning was a big deal – if it happened more than a few times, you'd be canned.

But on Friday's they'd lock the doors at 5:00 and bust out with the booze and all get lit. Then middle-aged married women would proposition me for sexual favors.

In today's work world people seem to be able to come and go as they please – as long as the work is getting done. And as far as dress goes, last week we gave a pitch at a customer’s office for a big project and they (the customers) were all in jeans (they work for one of the largest co in the world). In our workspace we have plasmas and an Xbox in the lounge. I surf sports board between tasks.

Today, any discussions of sex, religion, etc. are very taboo – during work hours.

Not saying one is better than the other, just musing.
