I read the book Flowers for Algernon in Jr. High, but have not seen the movie Charly. If memory serves me correctly, it was a good book. At least as far as books about mentally handicapped people exponentially raising their IQ and then having it all taken away from them go.
As for the Mormon movie Charley, I still remember standing in line at the computer lab in the Wilkinson Center basement while the Lab Assistants discussed seeing it the night before. One of the dudes was the kind of guy who still wore his mission Doc Martens with his jeans and a short-sleeve white shirt. Mention was made that it was a movie that a guy shouldn't be ashamed of crying at. I thought, "Hmmm...that's kind of weird."
But the next thing he said sealed my commitment to never, ever see the movie. He said,"It is the best movie I've seen since You've Got Mail." If I were MPFunk, I would have punched him in the face or kidney right then and there.
