Well, it is read for two reasons. First, to understand an unverifiable society that existed allegedly in a pre-Columbian context worshiped God and Christ in a 19th Century manner. Second, to use this platform as authority for the LDS Church.

I don't believe LDS read it in a form of typology as suggested by the Common Consent guy.
