300 was a work of fiction.
Byzantine cataphracts are mailed horsemen atop massive mailed horses. The men could probably wield more weapons at once from the back of a horse than any other cavalry in history. They were formiddable and they kept Byzantium secure for a thousand years while greatly outnumbered by the Ishmaelites. They were hardly losers.
