Default I was happier on Saturday than a puppy with two peters.......

That was an absolute blast. I admit I bolted when the went to the delay, but until then it was about the funnest 3 hours I have enjoyed with BYU football in a long, long time.

Let me preface this by saying that I think BYU beat a decent team. I think Tulsa would be about 4th in the MWC. I think the top tier of BYU, TCU and Utah are better but I don't believe any other team in the MWC is better than Tulsa, and to be blunt Utah is shaky at best. I also do not believe Tulsa played their best game, but BYU had something to do with it. I thought this was the best all around game by BYU that I have seen in some time. Offense, defense and special teams all played well and contributed. Certainly there were still mistakes and BYU is still not a great team, but for the talent at the Y and the ability of the opponent I struggle seeing BYU play better.

In my opinion that offense is BYU at its best. It plays to the Y's comparitive advantage of putting the game on the back of the OL. If BYU establishes the run their offense is good, without the run the offense depends upon John Beck and that is not BYU's best situation. John plays his best when he is not called upon to carry the team. I thought that the OL established that BYU was going to have its way on offense and the rest followed. Use the power and strength of the OL and Curtis and Fui to wear teams down and then eat up the middle of the field with the inside receivers and the backs, then John and the outside guys are only asked to make a few plays. They all did their jobs brilliantly. In fact I thought Saturday was the best I have seen John play in his career at BYU. He actually made a couple of plays where he was not the robotic qb. He did not have to carry the team, but when asked to make a couple of plays he finally scrambled and then hit a reciever who changed a pattern. When John is asked to carry the offense I think he stresses too much and spazes out, but on Saturday when the time came for John to playmake he did it and did it well.

I thought the defense continued to play well. Tulsa has a good offense. They are disciplined and experienced, but BYU controlled them well. I did not feel that the Y dominated Tulsa, but it employed a feisty bend but don't break defense that held a good offense in check. BYU forced Tulsa to make good plays, on some drives they could but on most they were just not good enough to get it done as consistently as was needed. If BYU's defense can play that well every game, the Cougs will be a very solid team. They are not a stiffling defense, but they force you to be good to beat them.

I actually think the special teams is improved. True there have been two huge gaffes, one in each game, but the coverages and the ability to return are like night and day from last year. A big part is the fact that the best players from BYU are on special teams. BYU is blessed right now to have a solid set of leaders and even moreso because those leaders go from seniors to sophmores.

As Curtis goes so goes BYU. Fui is a stud, but Curtis is this teams emotional leader. When he is on the team feeds off of it. I love Fui, I was on his bandwagon since I saw him on KO coverage as a redshirt freshman in 2003. He got in at least two fights each coverage. Fui is a pure football player - I think Tulsa now knows this. My stats for Fui include _______ fights per game and _______ broken tackles. Yards, receptions and TDs are fun but it is even more fun to keep track of my Fui stats. For last saturday Fui had 3 fights (one included an asswhooping of a Tulsa LB who lost his helmet on a BYU KO coverage) and I lost count of broken tackles at 25. The electricity in that stadium when Fui and Curtis broke off those two oft spoken of runs was exceptional. Especially the Fui one as fan attrition as a result of the rainstorm had only about 25000 fans left in the stadium, but the eruption was spectacular for so few folks.

BYU's fans are still pretty dorky, I don't think the cheer "take that Tulsa!" is particularly stinging, but I think they are getting more of a clue on the color scheme. Much more blue or white it seems.

I read Bronco's lips when he counselled with the refs concerning the conclusion that the whistle had blown before the Tulsa QB fumbled. I liked it.

I still think the Y will beat either TCU or BC and lose to the other. They will then lose one more regular season game. I will enjoy every single bloody minute of it.

Amen, goat. Fun game.

I missed the CB run due to being in the wrong line at the concession stand at halftime (arghhh!). But the Fui run in the 4th quarter was just amazing.

I was quite impressed with Tulsa. Their QB is a stud. And #30 was fun to watch also.

You missed the best game from the Y since Utah 2001.

This saturday's game will be fun, it will be a close game. I think the Y has a good shot.

Default Truly, Napper, my thoughts are your thoughts

Or is it the other way around? Whatever. I haven't been that happy watching a BYU game since 2001. Watching Curtis bull his way down the sideline in front of me, and Fui's crushing run later, would be enough to eliminate '71's Cialis needs for the next millennium. Best of all, it didn't seem to be a fluke; Saturday will tell us a lot. Better tackling, not many defensive mistakes, very good coverage on kicks, and consistent, intense effort for an entire game brought much relief to these tired eyes.

tghat breakout on the kickoff return was pretty cool. never thought I would see a creative play like that from BYU. however, the penalty was not surprising.

Interesting anecdote: Funnest and funner are only recognized words in the Utah and southern Idaho dialect of English.
