Default Black and Mormon

an NPR report:

NPR has been very fair in its coverage of the Church and Romney.

Could you explain your new icon? I see familiar faces, but I have no idea what they are doing.

Great find. Thank you for sharing.

Lauren Wilcox of the Washington Post gives a great explanation of the Priesthood ban in that piece. I wonder if The Church is using that with Rev. Al today.

Here is the Washington Post Magazine piece she wrote:

The Saints Go Marching In - With a history steeped in racism, the Mormon church is now targeting the African American community for new members. Will it take a miracle?

Religion rises inevitably from our apprehension of our own death. To give meaning to meaninglessness is the endless quest of all religion. When death becomes the center of our consciousness, then religion authentically begins. Of all religions that I know, the one that most vehemently and persuasively defies and denies the reality of death is the original Mormonism of the Prophet, Seer and Revelator, Joseph Smith.

Thanks for the article link, noah--that was pretty cool. A couple of quotes that struck me:

Quote:
"Going in, there's a lot of black people there. By the time [the missionaries] come out, they're just people. Race is never a part of the conversation except before [the missionaries] get there."
I said something similar to this on this very board a few days ago. I don't like referring to my black colleagues or ward members as black people. They're just people. Interesting to see how perspectives change once a dialogue gets opened.

Quote:
Did they want to try to identify the guy? "No," Nielsen says. "We just thought it would be cool to have the video."
LOL. Typical missionaries. I probably would've thought the exact same thing.

Quote:
I said, 'You are the devil!'" She stomps on the floor. " 'And I forgive you in the name of Jesus Christ!' Elders, tell me, was I right or wrong?"
Just another classic line.

For all the rancor on Cougarguard and in the media about our "racist" prophets, one thing I'll say for certain: the gospel of this Church will take the "ghetto out of the black man," to borrow a cliche, faster than anything else.
