If the Big 12 stays put....
Will they add 2 to get to 12?
Which two might it be? Every time I hear speculation, it seems like BYU and Utah are always brought up. BYU would be stupid to say no. More national exposure. Increase in TV money from something like 1.3 million a year to 8-10 million per year. In the current scenario, we face the very real possibility that BYU and Utah will be split up. I think A&M would be crazy to split from Texas. But I don't think a BYU and Utah split is the end of the world. I honestly never got into the rivalry. And I think there are a lot of BYU fans like me. Since so many people hate BYU and Mormons, its easy to form new rivals. |

I like the rivalry more than I did, but it would not be the end of world to form new ones. As you pointed out, everybody hates BYU, so new rivalries will easily form.
People don't inherently hate Utah, so forming new rivalries won't be as easy.

Why would Utah want to remain BYU's rival, it's everything the university disdains?
I imagine the two would move on, and because both survived, neither would look back.

My prediction is that the rivalry will continue, as is, initially. As years go by each school will evaluate how it evolves. If it dies it will be a gradual death and few will be disappointed when/if it ends.

A separation would end it, and BYU would be hated by somebody enough to raise it to a rivalry. Utah might not have such a heated rivalry, but leaving the conference would end it, perhaps somewhat gradually.

I would love to see BYU go to the Big 12.
My gut tells me that the Big 12 will go east for at least one school. To get more national recognition, they have to go east of the mississippi. |

Now the Arizona schools dominated for a while.
