Immutability of Gender
Even a blind squirrel can find a nut every once in a while. As I was perusing the 500+ pages of that "Lost Book of Lehi" guy that came up on CB yesterday, I came across something that actually piqued my interest (I recognize that the guy is an admitted fraud - I've got to admit, though, this stuff is surprisingly cogent upon a quick scan).
Anyway, it led me to this question: When was our gender determined? We are taught that we have always existed as "intelligences." We also have been taught that we were created as "spirit children" of God before we were born. However, it appears that gender of our physical body is determined by whether an "X" sperm or a "Y" sperm reaches the egg first. Hormones then trigger the formation of male/female gender characteristics, and the embryo turns into either a male or female fetus. So, is gender a trait of our physical body, or is it a trait of our spiritual body? I think we've always assumed the latter - maybe some of the more scholarly types will have references on this issue, but it strikes me as something that's just always been assumed. Anyone have thoughts on this issue and the potential ramifications for either option?

I think our traditional teachings on gender are an immense oversimplification which probably works for most people until they start thinking about it much. And I have no idea how to answer your question. |
