I heard some of them send their kids to community colleges to suppliment their educations.

Of all religions that I know, the one that most vehemently and persuasively defies and denies the reality of death is the original Mormonism of the Prophet, Seer and Revelator, Joseph Smith. |

Sending your homeschooled kid to CC at age 16 is their way of "proving" that homeschooling is superior to public schooling. "Look how fast my kid finished the equivalent of a high school curriculum."
As if somehow being in a crappy public college protects their kids and educates them more than high school. |

Jeez. You must have been homeschooled. Or community colleged. Bet you wish you could've gone to high school with Mike for a truly superior higher education experience. I know I do! |

I find homeschooling ironic. Homeschoolers don't do it b/c they think the education is better, but b/c they want to protect their kids from the bad influences present in public schools. But by protecting the kids from the socialization that occurs in public schools, the homeschoolers create socially awkward kids who have a very hard transition once they are required to interface with society.
Unless you really think you can provide a truly superior education at home, don't do it. The usual qualifiers apply: generalities here; I acknowledge exceptions. |

The vast majority of homeschoolers I know do it because the public school system in Utah sucks. There may be a side-benefit in their minds of "protecting their kids", but the primary benefit is education. And in protecting their kids, they typically don't talk about keeping them away from the "world", it's more keeping them out of the ridiculously stupid junior high and high school social crap. But again...primary aim--education. The major benefit I see to homeschooling is social. I went to a very competitive high school academic program and was involved in sports and a few other smaller extracurricular commitments. I NEVER had time just to hang out with friends because I was so overcommitted everywhere else. And yet I feel like my rigorous high school education was EXTREMELY valuable in college and I wouldn't want to give up extracurriculars. If I ever decided to homeschool my kids, it would be so they could achieve the same academic levels and still have time to hang out with friends. |

I don't particularly care a lot about this issue, and I think there is probably a wide variety of reasons for doing it, and a wide variety of outcomes based on the personalities and abilities involved.
However, it seems to me that the people who preached so fervently in favor of one parent always being home with the kiddos should be homeschool advocates. Otherwise, why would schools not just be raising your kids? |

NorCal? We're awaiting your answer to RedHead Gal's question: "However, it seems to me that the people who preached so fervently in favor of one parent always being home with the kiddos should be homeschool advocates. Otherwise, why would schools not just be raising your kids?"
