Missionary sues WV scholarship program
An LDS missionary is suing a West Virginia state scholarship program for refusing to defer his scholarship.
http://chronicle.com/news/index.php?id=2734 I think the kid has a point. He earned it; he should be able to keep it - especially in a world where, increasingly, (cursory, at least) attention is being paid to community awareness and service. On the other hand, the local high school where I live (PA) re-scheduled several play practices and performances from Sundays to Saturdays after some LDS kids made a big stink about not doing Sundays. I don't know if there were any Seventh Day Adventist or Jewish kids in the school, but my non-LDS source said a lot of people were pretty cheesed that so many people had to re-schedule in order to accommodate the wishes of a few. These examples aren't the same thing - one is a single person who earned a scholarship; the other involves many people. Yet, there is a thread of continuity as the two episodes ask others to change policies for religious preferences/practices. Obviously, most are going to conclude that there must be some middle ground between intolerance and complete indulgence, but where should that line be drawn? What think ye?

While I think it's amusing that folks were irritated by Mormons being accommodated, I think the "majority rules" policy should apply in this case. If the LDS kids and their parents knew in advance that events were scheduled on Sundays, they shouldn't have participated.
