Utah as a swing state
I think the smartest way to run a campaign would be to visit every state in the union and reach out to specific, major groups without alienating minorities.
Sometimes I dream about Obama coming to Utah and "reaching out" to Mormons in a speech. He could acknowledge differences on key issues like abortion, while focusing on aspects of his political worldview that are compatible with Mormonism or Christianity. I believe that Mormons desperately want to be acknowledged, accepted, and understood. The same is true of almost every group in society. If a democratic presidential candidate would reach out to Mormons (and all other major groups), I think a significant percentage of them would vote democrat. Unfortunately, the Mormon vote doesn't mean anything, so Obama will never give that kind of speech in Utah. The Bush campaign reached out to religious groups by making web sites like "KerryWrongForMormons.com" and "KerryWrongForBaptists.com" (no longer in existence). Why can't Obama reach out to religious groups too, but with a positive message? |

Democrat Presidential hopefuls are too big of pussies to come to Utah, especially that Rocky the Weasel is no longer mayor of Salt Lake.

Obama was scheduled to come to Utah before the primary, but President Hinckley died that weekend and he opted out to show respect. IIRC, his wife came and met with Elder Ballard.

If you were a campaign strategist, why would you allow your boss to come to Utah? what a huge waste of time. Very few EC votes at stake. It isnt a Utah thing. they also arent spending a ton of time in Idaho, Nebraska, or Kansas, either. Galvanizing the mormon vote is useless, too. Didnt help Mitt out much.

Obama should get baptized. That would galvanize the Mormon vote.

Bob Barr would get a better reception in Utah than Obama.

Ron Paul would do better in Utah than Obama, and Ron Paul may actually be certifiable.
