A cool bit of info about Che....
I served in Bolivia and one of my areas was Vallegrande. For those that do not know the story, Che left Cuba and came to Bolivia to start a Communist revolution there. For various reasons, he was unsuccessful, not least of which was that this time, the CIA was actually involved (Che was used to using dissidents and political activists to fight disorganized local armies). He was captured and executed in a tiny village called La Higuera. There is actually a monument to him there. As the legend goes, they cut off his hands to prove that it really was him that had been killed. After he was executed, he was brought to Vallegrande (a nearby series of larger, yet stil very small villages that are centered around a main river that runs through the area....we traveled to some places by motorboat...very fun). In Vallegrande, he was put in display for the public and then buried locally. While the official word from Bolivia was a "no comment" on what happened with Che's body, all the locals knew that he was buried in VG. There were several theories as to where he was buried....when I was there, I heard that he was buried in the catholic church in the main plaza, or on a local hill, etc...years later it turned out that he was buried underneath a paved road that served as an airstrip. The people of VG are very proud of their role in the capture and execution of Che, yet he is viewed as a menace and not a martyr. He was there to sow the seeds of revolution and the folks in Bolivia have a very strong sense of patria....so while they are happy to have caught and killed him, they do not revere him at all. I have no clue why he is revered locally by posers who hang out at Starbucks. PS I also find it ironic that Colly Wolly is asking why people revere Che.

Is his avatar really a play on the Che poster, or are you assuming it is?

It's a play on the Che poster, but I'm still confused by the phenomena. I find it ridiculous and am interested in exploring why it exists. Must be because people are idiots. Like the time a kid walked into one of my Chinese classes at BYU wearing a Mao shirt. I just shook my head.

I find it offensive. (Hey Levin, my agreement with you in action!)
