Is Bronco really a straight shooter?
PK was talking about Bronco this morning. He talked about how honest he was and how refreshing that was compared to Crowton. He said he never had any reason to doubt anything Bronco said--everything's an open book.
I hope not. Goat has a theory that Bronco's hardass gospel approach to recruiting is just an act. That Bronco's not really like that, and that it's just a temporary thing he used to help get him the head coaching job in his interview with GA's, and to calm down the lynch mob squad that is the BYU admin and large boosters. These guys want blood when it comes to HC issues and they want changes to the program. Bronco's giving it to them, but as soon as the attention dies down, he'll slowly start recruiting more and more non-LDS until the level is basically the same with Crowton. Goat, did I do your theory justice? I hope Goat's theory is true. It would be one of the first times I saw some strategy or vision from Bronco that I thought was smart. |

I agree with Goatnapper. If Mendenhall is going to keep BYU competitive, he can't rely on LDS athletes (meaning those who will serve and have served) a mission. There just aren't enough of them around, especially with other schools around the country finally starting to understand that if a mission is important enough for a high level athlete, it's in the best interest to allow him to serve that mission.
Right now, Mendenhall is appeasing the masses. Nothing wrong with that.

Appeasing the masses is part of his job.
If that is his intent, he's doing it more skillfully than I would have anticipated. Kudos to him.
