Default Over 30? Don't ski.

As in Utah, skiing is very popular in Seattle. We don't have any world class resorts within 30 minutes of downtown but there are some respectable ones within an hour away, and some say Whistler is the best in the world, about four hours from Seattle. Many of my partners and other colleagues ski and this time every year some of them are dragging themselves around with terrible injuries--broken legs, dislocated knees, cracked skulls (one just this year; he's in physical therapy, etc. after spending a couple of weeks in a hospital in Vancouver following a fall from a cliff in Whistler). I know this type of thing would be a burden on my family and a challenge for my career.

It's inevitable, if you're over 30 you'll hurt yourself badly if you ski unless you are a former pro or the like. It's not worth it. Don't ski.

I have never been skiing and I will never go for this reason.

No skiing over 30?!?

Gee thanks, Seattle, why didn't you tell me this LAST week?

So much for the theory about me being soft compared to SU. I went skiing a couple of weeks ago (and had not been in a few years) and I had a great time. My wife, who has never been a great skier, freaked out when we got off the lift the first time and grabbed my sleeve causing us both to fall (and I smacked my head pretty hard). After that, apart from a few minor tumbles, no big falls and we had fun. To tell you the truth,. I didn't really start to get my ski legs back until I hit the steeper runs. It is easier to ski with proper form when the slope is steeper, I think. Don't be a wimp, SU, hit the slopes.

BTW, I do not include heli-skiiing off of cliffs at Whistler as "skiing"

I skied religously in jr high, and high school. I have been skiing with my kids for the last ten years or so. We always wear helmets.

I skiied a TON as a kid and got really good... I am 29 now (30 in 2 months) and went skiing for the first time in 5 years last weekend. Had a blast and was barely sore. Never worn a helmet skiing.

Yeah, keep going, you'll see. You'll be getting around with one of those wheelie things you kneel on, if it isn't a whole lot worse. Not worth it.
