D'Angelo: it is a real shame that this guy disappeared off the face of the planet
I consider his album Voodoo to be one of the finest soul albums ever made. I have also heard he is incredible live and these videos support it. For some reason I cannot get the youtube to imbed in the post so here are the links.

Very talented guy. Isn't he in prison? Not meant to be a racist comment...honestly if memory serves me correct I thought he got busted for something pretty bad and is serving time, but could be someone else. I've enjoyed quite a bit of his stuff.

Yes he spent some time in prison, but I believe he is out right now. I think he was busted for possession and a few other things. I believe this was around '05 that he went to prison, which gave him 5 years for a follow up to Voodoo. I believe his problem is marijuana took away all his ambition. I have heard rumors that he is out of prison and working on a new album, I hope this is true.

Another great live performance, I miss good soul music. It has been a long time since a soul album I liked was released.

Not the greatest quality in the world, but still well worth a listen. Actually this is the best one that I posted, because it is not a TV shot so it seems to stretch out a bit more.

Speaking of soul, I know that it suffers from overexposure, but what about Gnarls Barkley's album? I don't know if you like that, but I do. |

My Problem with D'angelo was he did a whole music video butt naked. Everytime i heard him i thought of him naked and it just didnt work for me.
Gnarls is pretty good imo, i enjoy their music.

I will have to check out Gnarls Barkley, I have not heard it but would love to hear some good neosoul. I also am interested in checking out the Raphael Saadiq album.
A few great soul albums I have been listening to lately. D'Angelo: Voodoo Curtis Mayfield: Curtis/Live Kamaal the Abstract: this is Q-Tip's soul album and it is very good. I have not heard the whole thing, because it was never released. It is a shame that a terrible album like Amplified got released, but this thing has never seen the light of day. It really needs to get released Marvin Gaye: pretty much anything he has done |
