I now have t-mobile EDGE
It's pretty cool--I can use my phone as a wireless modem for my Mac (even though the phone is windows mobile). I just measured my speeds, 62 kbps download, 39 kbps upload. So not so fast. But way better than 3kb/s old-school modem.

You can use a Sprint phone as a USB-tethered modem for a laptop. 234 kbps both ways. No monthly fee. Connects in seconds.

Yeah, but it's free. And faster.

No data plan required. Just a basic cell phone contract.

EDGE is slower than EVDO, but definitely serviceable. EVDO is the CDMA counterpart to GSM's EDGE.

I just read that back in 2006 with an alltel phone you could hack Sprint's network and get free data. But I didn't find anything saying Sprint's data from Sprint is free.

But I don't want to make you puke, so have fun with your expensive 39 kbps connection. (can electrons even move that slowly? hmmm....)
