the stereotype of large families
they featured a family of 11 kids in that documentary.
There is only one large family in my ward. Maybe 7 or 8 kids. Increasingly, the large family thing is rare. Maybe it is different in Utah. |

Still big families in Utah, but it's come down a bit.
Growing up, 5 was the average, with lots of 6 and 7's. Anyone with less than 4 kids was considered borderline apostate and/or democrats. Now I'd say 4 is the average, with some 3's and 5's. The Northern California ward I lived in was basically like the Utah ward I'm in now as far as family size. |

Most large families in today's Mormon Culture are getting older.
For example: I grew up in a large family of 8 children. The youngest is 28. Now that Generations X & Y are starting to have families you won't be seeing the trend of that big of famillies anymore. Even in Utah.

The last source I saw on this said that the average Mormon women average 3.3 children in their lifetime as opposed to something like 2.2 or 2.3 per woman for other American women. So the large family stereotype still fits somewhat. But it is certainly not as prevalent as it once was and the number has dropped by nearly half IIRC.

I grew up as one of five (and now have five of my own). I never thought we had a large family growing up in SLC because one family in our ward had 10 and our another had 8. A typical family in my ward was about 6 kids so our family of five kids was no big deal.
When I was 12 we took a family vacation to New York City. We were eating in a restaurant when a lady came up and asked my Mom in an incredulous voice "Are all those kids yours?" I'll never forget the amazement in that lady's tone of voice - you would have thought she had just encountered a three headed alien as opposed to meeting a family of five kids. |

Ahh - the Dugger Family. I've watched the shows about them on TLC. Fascinating. I think she is up to 16 kids now?

Not different in Utah. Among the younger families that are finishing their families, 3 kids seems to be the average with 6 being on the high side. 6 is most in my current ward. Same for last ward.
