The God Complex
No, this isn't a religous post. I am talking about doctors. Anyone else see this thread today?
http://www.cougarboard.com/noframes/...tml?id=2091350 This is incredible. And it confirms my suspicions about doctors. Many of them will go ahead and pretend to know what they are talking about when they clearly should be refering you to a specialist. I don't even mess with regular doctors anymore except for the most routine ailments. Specialists are the way to go.

why someone would want to treat prima donna athletes is beyond me. They don't pay anymore and they expect special treatment.
But I guess it massages his ego. |

That's kind of weird.
I'll tell you this much, Family Practice Physicians are some of smartest doctors available. They are cheap, easily accessible, and generally have good advice on who to see for specialty care. Here in Utah I would not see a doctor save I visited my family practice doc first as the care here, IMO, is great. You would be surprised at how little specialists know, and how much general practitioners know about what the specialists should know. |

Oh, come on. I have only had one bad experience with a specialist (endodontist). I have had lots of bad experiences with regular doctors.

I work with Doctors on a daily basis from coast to coast.
Quite a few of them do have the God Complex. There are several very cool ones out there, but like lawyers, in general, most of them are narcissistic ad nauseum.

'Regular doctors' play an integral part in the health care experience, and would always deal with a regular doctor before I moved to a specialist. First off, how are you getting orders for a specialist? You just whipping them out of your ass? You know, many insurance companies require that you are referred to a specialist before they will consider payment. Second, you break your hand, why would you go to a specialist straight off the bat and spend $500 plus, when you can go to a 'regular' doctor and pas $250 for the same care? Do your family, pocket book, and insurance group a favor and go to your 'regular' doctor. |

I would say it's less about God complex than money. It's no different for drs. than for lawyers or engineers. Lots of competition for clients, thus economic incentives sometimes drive pushing the specialization envelope. Often, for example, cardiologists and heart surgeons can't agree on who should do angioplasties. There are similar squabbles between plastic surgeons and general surgions or burn specialists. It happens all over, and it's all about money.
Waters notwithstanding, doctors are the greediest bastards I've ever met. This is often manifest in the fact that despite their professed hatred for lawyers, they are the most litigious class there is. Doctors have started the largest class action lawsuits in history (against health insurers). They have made much of the antitrust law in the past 20 years, a field that has been otherwise relatively quiet. And they've been on the losing end of these suits amost without exception; the suits have been frivolous and cost the public hundreds of millions if not billions that otherwise should have gone to health care. From what I've seen, most doctors went to med school for one reason: To be guaranteed a high salary without having to bear the risk of economic vicsisitudes or rise to a high comparative level in their profession. They are as a class a pretty gutless and imaginatoinless group of nerds who did their homework in school and nurse a lot of grudges against higher paid folks. Most of them also are extremely unhappy in their jobs and belly ache inceasantly about their low pay. In my opinion, the great bulk of them who are unhappy about their pay still get more than they deserve. The market demands that, yes, the ones who have the skill to remove aneurisms from the brain, do complicated bypass operations and the like deserve and get a lot. But the great unwashed mass of doctors are still overpaid. Their mass unhappiness is poetic justice (as are the financial scams to which many of them fall easy prey) given their ignoble motivations for becoming physicians in the first place.

SU's last paragraph is actually pretty right on.
In working with Dr's day in and day out,,,it's amazing how intelligent education wise some of them are, but incredible how the large majority of them are really dumb. Motionless drones who are motivated by the almighty $.
