I know no one cares, but why did SUU
can Bill Evans?
The guy has been there 15 years. It makes less sense for little programs to make moves just to make them. SUU will never be Utah State or even Weber |

From what it sounds like, it may have been a move to get Roger Reid in there as the coach.
He and the AD are buddies apparently.

Let's not kid ourselves. Southern Utah was terrible this year. They only beat the Utes by 3 points.

My old man is on the Board of Trustees at SUU and is fairly involved in SUU athletics. I'll ask him what he knows.

OK, here is the scoop: (NOTE: This is info I pieced together from my conversations with people in Cedar City the past few days so take it worth a grain of salt)
Evans thought he had a three-year contract extension. He signed the contract and it went to the university president for signature (the old university president - not the new one). For reasons still uknown to me, the outgoing president didn't sign the contract. Instead it "sat on his desk" so to speak until he was out the door. The whole issue was thus left for the new university president to handle. When the new president came in, he said, "whoa, before I sign this contract we ought to review things a little bit." The new president just happened to come from Snow College and just happened to be the one that hired Roger Reid to coach at Snow College. Word is that the new president talked things over with the athletic director (who was also relatively new) and basically "left the decision up to the athletic director". In the end, the athletic director said he felt they needed to go in a new direction and thus the contract extension for Evans was left unsigned on the university end. Lo and behold, Roger Reid is soon after announced as the new head coach at Southern Utah. What a coincidence! What I don't understand is why didn't the old pres. sign the contract? Why did he leave it unsigned and for the new pres. to deal with? In my opinion, there is more to the story than meets the eye in terms of the relationship between Evans, the university, and the old president. Unfortunately, my gossip sources don't provide any other insights on this. At the least, It will be interesting to see how Roger Reid does now that he is back at the DI level again. |
